Biological mechanism of escalated aggression in mice

研究概要／Summary

動物にとって攻撃行動は、なわばりや餌、交配相手を獲得し、それを守るうえで重要な役割を担っています。その一方で、攻撃行動が過剰になってしまうと、怪我を負うリスクが高まり、適応的とは言えなくなります。動物が適切なレベルの攻撃行動を示すうえで、攻撃行動を引き起こすアクセルとして働くメカニズムと、それを抑えるブレーキとなるメカニズムがバランスよく働くことが重要です。私の研究では、これらの攻撃行動の活性化・抑制化に関わる生物学的メカニズムを明らかにし、そのバランスがどのように崩れた際に攻撃行動が過剰となるのかを理解することを目指します。

Aggressive behavior is adaptive behavior for many animal species to obtain and protect their territory, food, and mates. However, aggressive behavior becomes problematic if it exceeds the species-typical level to be intensive escalated aggression. For animals to show adaptive level of aggressive behavior, it requires well-coordinated balance of activatory and inhibitory mechanism of aggression. My research aim is to understand those biological mechanisms, including neural circuit and genetics, that keep animal’s aggressive behavior to be adaptive level, and what kind of changes in those systems cause escalated aggression.
