新型コロナウイルス感染拡大の防止のために、世界中の博物館や美術館が長期休館を余儀なくされました。国内はもとより海外の展示を見ることができるのはいつになるか分かりません。
近年、ストリートビューで見られる範囲が博物館や美術館の内部まで広がり、絵画のような平面的展示物の遠隔鑑賞が可能になりつつあります。また、スミソニアン博物館では展示物のCGモデルを作成することで視点位置を移動しながらの３次元的な鑑賞サービスを提供しており、技術進歩により遠隔地の立体展示物の鑑賞も少しずつ可能になっています。しかし、博物館の多種多様な展示物の3Dモデルを作成するためには、膨大な労力・費用・時間が必要であるにも関わらず、鑑賞する人の視線を調査すると、代表的な見え方の視点で展示を見続ける、つまり視点をあまり動かさずに鑑賞する傾向が非常に強く、3Dコンテンツの高度な表現力が有効に活用されていないと言われています。Remote Museum Explorerプロジェクトでは、博物館の立体的な展示物を撮影した多視点画像と見どころなどを伝える文字情報を連動させることによって、閲覧者が自由かつインタラクティブに展示物の鑑賞を楽しめる技術の開発を目指しています。
Museums and art galleries worldwide have been forced to close for long periods of time to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is unclear when we will be able to see the exhibits in our country or abroad. In recent years, the visible scope of Street-View has been expanded to the indoor environment, such as museums and galleries, and we can observe plane-shaped exhibits（e.g., pictures, calligraphy, and photos）from a distance. The Smithsonian Museum created a 3D-CG model of the exhibits that enables visitors to move their viewpoints freely. However, even though an enormous amount of labor, money, and time is required to create 3D models of a wide variety of museum exhibits, a survey of visitors’ gazes revealed a strong tendency to continue to observe exhibits from typical viewpoints, i.e., to observe them without changing the viewpoint. As a result, the advanced expressive ability of 3D-CG content is not being used effectively. The “Remote Museum Explorer” project aims to develop technology that enables visitors to freely and interactively enjoy the exhibits by linking multiple viewpoints of the 3D images of the museum exhibits and textual information telling the highlights.
